What Do You Feed Your Dog?
Real food. Real nourishment. A healthier foundation for your dog’s life.
Dogs aren’t just pets — they’re family. And just like the rest of our family, what we feed them matters.
If you stood in your kitchen holding a bag of highly processed food and thought, “This probably isn’t great for my health,” would you still eat it every day for the rest of your life? That question alone changed everything for me — and for my dogs.
I feed my two dogs raw food. Not dry. Not cooked. Raw. Yes, that means uncooked meat and organs. And yes, it costs more than kibble. But I truly believe it’s one of the most important investments I’ve made in their long-term health. Let me share why.
Two Simple Reasons I Feed Raw
It really comes down to this:
1. Dogs are carnivores.
2. Dry, processed dog food is the equivalent of junk food.
2. Dry, processed dog food is the equivalent of junk food.
From the very beginning, God designed every living creature with what it needs to thrive. Dogs were not created and then left dependent on man-made food to survive well. Their bodies tell the story. Dogs have pointed teeth meant for tearing meat and a short digestive tract designed to process animal protein and fat efficiently. They were created to eat prey — not grains, fillers, or highly processed carbohydrates. When dogs are consistently fed foods their bodies weren’t designed to digest, we begin to see the fallout: digestive issues, skin problems, allergies, inflammation, and chronic disease. These foods don’t nourish them — they burden them.
How Did Kibble Become the Norm?
For most of history, dogs ate real food. They gnawed on bones, ate scraps from the table, and even hunted small prey. This changed only recently. Dry dog food didn’t appear until the mid-1800s, around the Industrial Revolution — a time driven by convenience and cost-cutting. In 1860, James Spratt observed dogs eating hardtack biscuits and decided to create a similar product specifically for dogs. That idea eventually evolved into meat meals, canned foods, and the kibble we know today.
Fast forward, and the pet food industry is now a multi-billion-dollar business — one built largely on convenience, marketing, and shelf life rather than optimal health. While harm may not have been the original intention, compromised health has been the result for many pets.
Over time, we were taught that feeding dogs anything other than dry, processed food was dangerous. But the truth is this: what nourished dogs at the beginning of time still nourishes them today.
Shouldn't Meat be Cooked?
This is a common question.
Could you cook your dog’s food? Yes — and it would still be an improvement over kibble. But think about it for a moment. Dogs are animals. What animal was created needing to cook its food before eating it? Cooking isn’t natural for them — it’s a human adaptation. Dogs are fully equipped to eat raw meat just as they always have.
Why I’ll Never Go Back
My dogs have eaten raw food for most of their lives. They are now 14 years young, and they’ve never gotten sick from eating raw food. They remain active, vibrant, and healthy — and for that, I am deeply grateful. I truly believe their food has played a foundational role in their well-being.
For a season, I made my own homemade raw meals. While it worked in theory, sourcing ingredients and finding the time eventually became overwhelming. Thankfully, I discovered high-quality, health-minded pet food companies that deliver frozen raw food right to my door.
Now it’s simple: pull a patty from the freezer, thaw, serve. Easy, nourishing, and sustainable for real life.
Is Feeding Raw Right for Every Dog?
Every dog is unique, and nutrition is not one-size-fits-all. This post is meant to share my personal experience and perspective, not to replace veterinary advice. I always encourage doing your own research.
