Antioxidants: What the Heck Are They and Why Do We Need Them?

If you’ve ever come across the term “antioxidant” and wondered what it really means, you’re not alone. Antioxidants are a buzzword in the health and wellness world. My understanding has been fuzzy, at best. so in an effort to bring more clarity to the subject, I found myself researching and taking notes. Those notes turned into this blog post.  Understanding what antioxidants are and why they’re crucial can empower you to make choices that support long-term healthHowever, before I explain what they are and why they are needed, I find it helpful to understand free radicals first.

What Are Free Radicals?

Everyone’s body generates millions of free radicals every minute. On the outside, it results in lines, sagging, and dull skin. Internally, it creates inflammation, which can lead to heart, lung, and gastrointestinal diseases and some cancers. Free radicals are unstable atoms or molecules with at least one unpaired electron. The unpaired electron is highly reactive, seeking out another electron to pair with and become stable. The problem is, the electron it steals might come from a healthy cell in your body. This damages cellular structures, impairing their function. Over time, free radical damage can accumulate, leading to oxidative stress, increasing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative conditions. Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to detox their harmful effects. Our body detoxes for us through neutralization by antioxidants. So antioxidants are incredibly important to our health! Without them, oxidative stress leads to many diseases or injuries within the body.

What Are Antioxidants?

Now let's talk about the term “antioxidant.”  It doesn’t refer to a single compound but rather a group of compounds with a shared activity: preventing oxidation. Oxidation is a natural process in the body, but when it gets out of control due to factors like toxins, poor diet, stress, or excessive sun exposure, it produces free radicals.

Enter antioxidants. They are molecules stable enough to stabilize free radicals by donating an electron, which stops the chain reaction of cellular damage. Think of antioxidants as part of your defense team, stepping in to prevent or delay harm to your cells. This process is vital for maintaining cellular health and preventing the chain reaction of oxidative stress. A lifestyle rich in antioxidants is foundational to good health.

Sources of Antioxidants

SO, where do you find these powerful compounds? Since the body doesn’t produce enough antioxidants on its own, it’s essential to consume them through diet and supplementation. Antioxidants come in many forms, such as vitamins, enzymes and phytonutrients. You can find them abundantly in colorful fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, goji berries (wolfberries), apples, spinach, kale, and sweet potatoes. Herbs, teas, and certain supplements can also provide a concentrated source of antioxidants.

Benefits of Antioxidants

Research suggests that consuming antioxidant-rich foods and supplements may contribute to:
- Slowing Signs of Aging: Protects skin, eyes, joints, heart, and brain from oxidative damage.
- Youthful Skin: Promotes glowing, healthy skin by reducing cellular damage.
- Reduced Cancer Risk: Protects cells from mutations caused by free radicals.
- Detoxification Support: Aids the liver in clearing toxins.
- Cardiovascular Protection: Reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke.
- Brain Health: Lowers the risk of cognitive issues like dementia.
- Vision Preservation: Helps prevent macular degeneration and cataracts.
- Longevity: Supports overall vitality and a longer lifespan.

How to Incorporate Antioxidants Into Your Life

To harness the power of antioxidants, focus on:

1. Eating the Rainbow: Include a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables in your daily meals.
2. Choosing High-Quality Supplements: Opt for reputable brands that offer antioxidant-rich products if your diet needs a boost.
3. Reducing Oxidative Stressors: Avoid excessive sun exposure, manage stress, and limit processed foods and toxins in your environment.

Final Thoughts

You cannot completely avoid free radicals. They are naturally present in your body and they are present all around you. You are exposed to them through UV rays, pollution, smoking, eating an unhealthy diet, excessive exercise, certain medications and/or treatments, and more. However, you can lighten their impact by avoiding the things that contain free radicals & START incorporating antioxidant-rich foods & supplements into your diet. Antioxidants are foundational for cellular health and play a key role in preventing chronic diseases. By incorporating antioxidant-rich foods and reducing exposure to oxidative stressors, you can support your body’s natural defenses and promote long-term health. It’s one small step with a significant impact.
